All about your cat

Veterinary wellness schedule for cats

After receiving a young kitten, you should watch its behavior closely and the potential incidence of any clinical signs during the integration process. Some of the classic clinical signs that may occur are loss of activity and/or appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, sneezing, nasal discharge, red-rimmed eyes, coughing, itchiness, hair loss, etc.

Look out! Every newcomer with these symptoms might be of potential risk for the health of other pets in the household (same or different species) and for yourself and your family (zoonoses)!

Initial examination to evaluate the kitten`s general health, parasitic treatment (deworming, ectoparasites, like flees, ticks, mites) and dietary advice. Outdoor cats should be dewormed on a regular base every 3 months, and be prophylactic treated against ectoparasites once a month.

Active vaccination starts at an age of 9 weeks, depending on the vaccine and disease. All vaccinations (against feline herpes-, calici-, parvo-, leukemia-), with the exception of rabies, have to be repeated 4 weeks later and will be renewed once a year. The decision which of the above mentioned vaccinations is adequate for your cat, depends on its individual living conditions and will be discussed with you thoroughly (indoor or outdoor cat, any contact with other cats, traveling abroad, stay in a cat pension, etc.).

Remember! For travelling abroad with your cat, you have to carry along with you the new EU-pet-passport (since October 2004 under EU-law) with documented, current vaccinations and unmistakable, distinguishing features of your pet (implanted microchip is mandatory since 2011)!

Castration (neuter and spay) with 6 months of age before sexual maturity. This is also the opportunity for tattooing (only possible under anesthesia!) and/or for implanting the microchip.

Notice! Male intact, outdoor cats move further away from their homes, will be more often listed as missing and rather fight with other cats defending their territory! They also contribute to an uncontrolled reproduction, which in the end leads to overcrowded animal shelters!

Healthy teeth constitute the basis for the general health of your cat! But there are only a few cats – like the cat Undo – that can be convinced of brushing their teeth on a daily base.

Therefore a regular ultrasonic dental scaling and polishing helps to prevent the formation of tartar, reduces the inflammation and shrinking of the gums and prevents periodontal disease with dental loss and probable sepsis.
